Christan Democrat, Giulio Anmdreotti, on trial over allegations of Mafia links and ordering a journalist's death, has received a warm welcome from a Catholic group. Meanwhile, politician Silvio Berlusconi, is unlikely to stand down from leadership of the political right, due to convictions against him. Former prime minister, Bettino Craxi, is in Tunisia and has been sentenced on corruption charges in his absence. Many Italians have little respect for thier legal system, and voters appear unconcerned about corruption cases.

The recent local elections took place under new rules created by a referendum, and the sentiment for change shown by the results was a response to a rash of political scandals. The federalist Northern League won 41% of the vote in Milan.
