Not all as cosseted as consumers say
Article Abstract:
French farmers may work long hours for little money, and European Union (EU) aid tends to go to cereal farmers who are the richest farmers with the biggest farms. France aims to change support for farming and promote more environmentally friendly methods. Smaller farmers are keener on this plan than are larger farmers. France has the largest portion of the EU aid for agriculture, and French farmers tend to protest when charges to subsidies are suggested. The number of farms has also dropped, despite their protests.
