Not so fast: Malaysian growth slows from breakneck pace
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's economic growth is one of the most impressive in the world. The country's central bank, however, has disclosed that GDP for the 3rd qtr 1992, has posted a 6.4% rise, a substantial decline from the 9.1% and 9.6% rates in the second and third quarters of 1991 respectively. The drop also means that Malaysia will not be able to reach its 8.7% GDP goal for the entire 1992. The economic slowdown was attributed to the modest performances of the mining and manufacturing industries.

On an even keel
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's economy performed best among the Assn of South East Asian Nations (Asean), with the central bank, Bank Negara, reporting 8% growth in 1992. Growth rates for five other Asean countries were much less than 8%. Moreover, a 7.6% decline in gross domestic product will allow the government to deal with the inflation and inadequate infrastructure that became manifest during the period of growth. A balance of payments surplus is another favorable indicator.

Hey, big spenders: Malaysia's consumers worry economic planners
Article Abstract:
Conspicuous consumption is in evidence everywhere in Malaysia. The country's economic future is threatened by an avalanche of luxurious spending which afflicts not only the upper classes but also the lower middle class especially the youth. The country is wary of enforcing taxes because of political reasons. Aggravating the situation is the increased pay given to government workers, a development seen as bearing inflationary consequences.
