Article Abstract:

East Timor, that won its independence from Indonesia in 1999, may not be ready to assume complete independence, if one looks at the fluid political situation in the country due to which the United Nations Security Council is likely to accept a proposal to stay back after the deadline of midnight of May 19, 2004. Critics are wary of the hard-line leaders who are known to be corrupt, a legacy they say of their previous rulers, and with pessimism over the growth of the economy many feel it would only be right for the United Nations to stay back.
