Article Abstract:
There are very mixed views about whether the foreign policy of the US government will change under new secretary of state Madeleine Albright and new defense secretary, Republican William Cohen. In terms of policy towards Asia, many observers feel that the new national security team lacks people with strong intellectual qualities, and policy towards Asia may therefore veer away from its current steady approach. There are also still severe doubts about whether president Bill Clinton is willing to go any further than simply maintaining the existing policy on Asia.

Troubled persuader: hard knocks await Radio Free Asia's soft line
Article Abstract:
The new US broadcasting service in Asia still faces controversy just two months before its Sept 1996 debut, with several issues suggesting it will not be able to meet its mission. Originally created as Radio Free Asia, it has been re-named Asia Pacific Network, a private corporation with a lighter tone and different agenda than the official Voice of America network. Few countries near China seem eager to allow it to use their transmitters, and backers in the US say the Clinton Administration is dropping its support.
