Oil-rich diet: Beijing is asked to explain its maritime appetite
Article Abstract:
Chinese vagueness about the country's claims in the South China Sea are beginning to frustrate even Indonesia, which long considered itself neutral on the dispute. Now, however, officials in Jakarta acknowledge pressing China about its claim to the Natuna gas field, well inside Indonesian territorial waters. Indonesia remains suspicious of China, with which it had no relations from 1970 to 1994. China seems to deliberately fuel regional anxiety with its claims and slow southward march.

Crusade for condoms: health secretary wages a war against over-population
Article Abstract:
Philippine Health Sec Juan Flavier is vigorously advocating the use of condoms for birth control and to stop AIDS despite the Catholic Church's strong opposition. Flavier believes that curtailing population growth is essential to the country's future. Manila's conservative archbishop, Cardinal Jaime Sin, has denounced Flavier's policy, but the failure of most Filipinos to heed Sin shows that the Philippine Catholic Church has lost moral authority.

Battle of the bulge: church and state clash over contraception
Article Abstract:
Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos has joined with Health Sec Juan Flavier to challenge the Catholic Church over contraception. Ramos's government advocates direct contraception to reduce the nation's annual population growth from 2.8% or higher to 2% by decade's end. The church, to which 80% of Filipinos belong, has called for Catholic health workers to actively sabotage the government's birth-control plans. Public opinion appears to support Ramos.
