Old habits
Article Abstract:
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team has visited Romania to attempt to help with the country's finances. Prime minister, Radu Vasile, has set deadlines for reform and has succeeded in pushing a budget through parliament. The IMF allowed a previous loan agreement to collapse due to lack of reform, but is suggesting a new loan. Romania is unlikely to enjoy economic growth in 1998 and suffered a contraction in 1997. The government has promised tight monetary and fiscal policies as well as privatizations but there is concern that it could lose enthusiasm.
