Old-world charm
Article Abstract:
A merger is planned between Honeywell and AlliedSignal which aims to boost profits and cut costs. The merger was well-received by investors and the two companies have seen rises in their stock prices. The new Honeywell will rank third among western industrial groups, after General Electric from the US, and Tyco. There are still questions about how viable conglomerate coporations can be, when such groups have become unfashionable. Investors tend to prefer to select the industries where they invest, though this may be offset by the attractions of good management.

The death of Daewoo
Article Abstract:
The South Korean conglomerate, Daewoo, is to be broken up, retaining its automobile and trading operations and selling off its other Korean businesses. The company has had long-term financial problems, but it was thought that the conglomerates would not be allowed to fail. No Daewoo company is to be liquidated due to concern about unemployment. The company increased the number of its subsidiaries at a time when the government had asked the conglomerates to scale down, and it also increased the size of its debt.
