On the organization of cooperative research and development: theory and evidence
Article Abstract:
Research and development partnerships between competing business organizations have become increasingly common in the development of new technologies for use in downstream business. Two examples of these organization types are equity research joint ventures (RJV) and non-equity co-development (COD), which differ in terms of how ownership rights are determined over the new technological innovations. In circumstances of contractual incompleteness, the type of downstream business of the firms involved are found to decide the choice of the organization of the joint R&D.
