On the practice of OR in Hungary
Article Abstract:
Operations research (OR) and its practice in Hungary are mainly advanced by universities through their mathematics, industrial engineering, computer science and management courses. To date, the Computer and Automation Institute (CAI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has developed a Windows-based decision support system, WINGDSS, which has been adapted for many government applications. CAI has also enhanced and developed software for long-term electricity demand expansion planning.

Distribution of gas cylinders
Article Abstract:
The problem of planning the daily delivery of gas cylinders within Hungary was solved and a Borland C++ implementation of the solution developed for Primagaz-Hungaria. It pertains to the minimum-cost scheduling and routing of trucks as well as assignment of capacities to filling stations. The solution recasts the problem as a linear integer optimization problem which may be further decomposed into a linear optimization and a travelling-salesman problem.

Singular value decomposition in AHP
Article Abstract:
A study demonstrates that singular value decomposition (SVD) appears to be a good tool to provide a theoretically sound solution in the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for scaling and consistency problems. The SVD approach is illustrated and compared with the eigenvector method (EM) for numerical examples.
