Article Abstract:
Nissan is to close five factories in Japan, as well as shedding jobs in order to tackle the problem of overcapacity after having invested too much in the bubble years. Nissan is to reduce the number of platforms, and costs can be reduced through platform sharing with Renault. Procurement costs are also to be reduced by cutting supplier numbers. Shedding jobs will be expensive, so Nissan may be unable to reduce its debt level by as much as planned.
