Once more, with feeling
Article Abstract:
Researchers have sought to make computer voices appear to sound more human, and a new approach is being tried by a University of Florida research student, D'Arcy Haskins Truluck. She aims to inject emotion into these voices using rules on how voices change according to which emotion is being expressed. She does not alter existing prosody rules, but her higher-level rules are introduced, and a given sentence can be said using four mood types. Happiness has proved to be the most difficult mood to characterize, while sadness has been relatively easy.
