Only widows and orphans?
Article Abstract:
Women have sometimes played a major role in politics in Asian, but it has often been linked to the role of men in the family, with widows of politicians in the news in a number of countries. This includes Benigno Aquino in the Philippines. Wan Azizah is the wife of imprisoned former deputy prime minister of Malaysia, and is also involved in politics. India has seen the development of a political dynasty which includes widows and daughters, such as Indira Gandhi, daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru. It would be a welcome trend if women were more involved in politics in Asia on their own merits rather than as relations of male politicians.

Democracy in Asia
Article Abstract:
There is increasing pressure for democracy in Asia in countries such as Myanmar where the junta has refused to accept an election result of 1990. Anwar Ibrahim has become a focal point for the opposition in Malaysia. Problems have been created by allowing economic growth to take precedence over democracy, especially once growth has faltered and expectaions have been destroyed. Indonesia has seen riots and there are vested interests opposing reform.
