The honeymoon is over
Article Abstract:
Overseas companies doing business in Vietnam increasingly complain of problems with local partners and officials, largely due to the lack of a reliable dispute-resolution system. Australian mining company Westralian Sands' experience with its Vietnamese partners in joint venture Austinh revolve around the Vietnamese general director, Vu Kim Cu. Some observers say Westralian was insensitive to the local business culture, but company officials suspect an effort to railroad them out and seize their assets.

Reality check: government obstacles keep most private firms small
Article Abstract:
Private enterprise remains deeply mistrusted by Vietnamese officials, who routinely tilt the playing field in favor of state firms. Changing rules on land use, banking rates and regulations, trade quotas and licenses, and taxes and other levies, all conspire against private businesses. At the same time officials complain that private companies evade taxes and commit other sins, ones into which they are forced by government regulation. Breaking this disturbing cycle will not be easy.
