Optimal preventive maintenance policies in an M/G/1 queue-like production system
Article Abstract:
The maintenance of an unreliable single unit M/G/1 queue-like production system may result in loss of profit if optimal preventivemaintenance policies are not adopted. A maintenance policy that takes into consideration both production quality and quantity based on renewal theory is thus proposed. Applications of the policy show that a production system must have good monitoring technology for preventive maintenance operations to be effective. A highly unreliable system, however, is better left inoperable, as no maintenance policy will counterbalance losses incurred by such a system.

Flowshop sequencing with mean flowtime objective
Article Abstract:
A heuristic is developed to minimize mean flowtime for flowshop scheduling using sorting methods. The sorting heuristic is projected to solve the permutation flowshop problem by creating an initial solution and improving it in problem application. Simulation tests are then used to measure heuristic performance over different machine and job levels. The heuristic displayed an average 0.16% over optimum standards for 2000 small test problems.
