Optimization of neural networks: a comparative analysis of the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing
Article Abstract:
Backpropagation (BP), the most commonly used algorithm for optimizing neural networks, shows poor results in out-of-sample forecasting. The global search algorithm simulated annealing gives better results compared to BP but is restricted by its point to point search process. The genetic algorithm, which has a process of moving from one population point to another that enables it to discard possible local solutions, gives the best results among the three algorithms.

A comparative study of both standard and adaptive versions of threshold accepting and simulated annealing algorithms in three scheduling problems
Article Abstract:
Simulated annealing (SA) and threshold accepting (TA) techniques are compared using three scheduling problems. Two adaptive models of the techniques are also developed, referred to as the adaptive neighborhood search and adaptive temperature/threshold values. Results show that TA algorithms perform better than SA for both the standard and adaptive versions. Addition of descent approaches in TA can also improve performance.

A simulated annealing approach for manufacturing cell formation with multiple identical machines
Article Abstract:
A mathematical programming model for the cell formation problem with multiple, functionally identical, machines is developed. A simulated annealing procedure, which allows the user to control both the size and the number of the cells generated, is used in the industrial environment for the minimization of the intercellular flow.
