Order batching procedures
Article Abstract:
Two heuristic algorithms for batching orders in a horizontal travel order retrieval system are compared. Travel metric, warehouse representation, item location assignments, number of items per order and the total number of orders are considered in identifying optimal batching procedures. Skewed item location assignments combined with the spacefilling curve (SFC) and sequential minimal distance (SMD) heuristics significantly reduce average batch tour lengths up to 44%. While the SFC model is better for warehouses with Euclidean, rectilinear or Chebyshev metrics, the SMD model is better for facilities with the aisle metric.

Application of the integrated framework for the plant layout evaluation problem
Article Abstract:
An integrated framework for the plant evaluation problem is suggested to overcome the deficiencies of previous integration approaches. Further, the six vital issues in developing the integration methodology, namely user flexibility, method of weight assignment, normalization of index values, preceding direction of integration process, insensitivity to intermediate changes, and date efficiency and imformation imbalance, are analyzed. To minimize the efforts required in the integration process, the suggested methodology employs the features of criteria and hierarchical structure.

Example application of the cognitive design procedure for an order pick system: case study
Article Abstract:
The feasibility of using a cognitive design procedure for creating an Order Pick System is evaluated with regard to the system's overall structure and subsystem specification. Several parameters are considered in the analysis, including managerial issues and the transaction data. Results show that the potential of the proposed cognitive design scheme can be maximized by using computer-aided decision support systems.
