Otto Wichterle
Article Abstract:
Otto Wichterle produced a soft contact lens in 1961, and the method he used is still employed in the 1990s for lenses used by some 100 million people. He was a chemistry professor during the early 1990s and discovered a polymer with an affinity for water. His knowledge was only used later when his interest in contact lenses was aroused. The rights to his process were bought by Bausch and Lomb from the US in 1966. Wichterle was Czech and his discoveries were sold by the state, so he personally did not benefit.

Germany's desperate right
Article Abstract:
Germany's Christian Democrats have been hit by the resignation of Helmut Kohl as honorary party chairman after a campaign funds scandal. He has admitted to receiving undeclared donations, and has refused to state where these have come from. There is also an investigation into possible influence peddling during the period that Kohl was chancellor of Germany. The scandals not only affect the Christian Democrats, but also confidence in the German democratic system.
