Over-the-counter pharmaceuticals in France

Sales of over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals in France were worth FFr21.9 billion in 1996, with OTC products accounting for about 17% of the total FFr129.3 billion pharmaceuticals market. France had a FFr12.7 billion trade surplus in veterinary and human products in 1996, with France the third leading pharmaceuticals exporter of the OECD countries. Non-reimbursable medicines accounted for 11% of total medicine consumption in France in 1996, with reimbursable products accounting for 6%. OTC market growth could be restricted because doctors in France are paid for each medical act performed.

More cheese is manufactured in France than in any other European Union member country. France produced one quarter total European Union output in 1997, equating to 6.5 million tons of cheese. France's domestic market consumers approximately 1.4 million tons of cheese per annum, 65% of which is matured cheese products. Market analysts predict that raclette cheese will grow in popularity.
