Overreact in haste, repent at leisure
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom and Ireland have reacted to the bombing in Omagh, Northern Ireland, by recalling parliaments in both countries to pass new laws aimed at tackling terrorism. There is a danger that civil liberties could be restricted. People accused of belonging to illegal organizations may be convicted simply if a senior police officer testifies against them, if the proposals become law. The authorities hope to jail the most active Real IRA members and so remove a threat to peace. The hope is also that the police in Northern Ireland will use their new powers with caution.
