PASSENGER AMENITIES - RAILWAYS
Article Abstract:
The railway ministry has declared 1999-2000 as the Passenger Year and has announced that it will make efforts to provide reliable and better services to passengers. A Customer Care Institute will soon be opened in Delhi to improve the behaviour of railway staff like ticket collectors, booking clerks. The Passenger Reservation Systems at Delhi, Secunderabad, Calcutta and Mumbai have already been linked with the network and Chennai will also be linked to the network by March 31, 1999. The Railways has set up a RailNet and provided computers at 150 stations to monitor passenger complaints at the divisional, zonal and Railway Board's levels. A pilot project has been started to offer Tele Booking reservation facility at the New Delhi Reservation Complex. A Web page has been set up on the Internet so that people can access information on train schedules and connections from anywhere in the world. The Railways plans to launch a Rail Yatri Magazine in 1999-2000 to provide information about tourist spots, special tourist programmes and interesting topics. (khr)

FOCUS ON SAFETY IN YEAR OF PASSENGER

The Railway Ministry has declared 1999-2000 as the Passenger Year and drafted a plan to improve safety in trains. Walkie talkie sets have been given to drivers and guards of trains running on all A and B routes for making emergency contacts. This facility will be extended to all passenger trains by March 31, 1999 and to goods trains in 1999-2000. The Railways has stated that track circuiting will be completed from Fouling Mark to Fouling Mark on A, B and CRORE routes by March 1999. A pilot project of a Radio- Based Automatic Train Control System for the Delhi-Mathura section has been included in the 1999-2000 Budget. (khr)

The Railways plans to start 14 new train services in 1999-2000, which include the Chennai - Tirupati Shatabdi Express, the Shalimar - Haldia Intercity Express, the Kurla - Patna Superfast Express, the Guwahati - Chennai Express, the Delhi - Coimbatore Express and the Raichur - Gulbarga Intercity Express. It also plans to increase the frequency of the Bangalore - Visakhapatnam Express from two to four days a week. It also plans to extend the run of the Delhi - Gorakhpur Express to Raxaul and that of the Amritsar - Barauni Express to Katihar. (khr)
