PC industry feels the pinch: computer sales in Asia grew 8% in 3rd quarter
Article Abstract:
Asia's financial and stock market crises severely affected personal computer manufacturers in the region, as growth sales increased only by 8% during the third quarter of 1997, compared to a robust 26% growth rate in the previous year. Analysts believe that such loses were triggered by the failure of manufacturers to adapt with the sudden impact of currency depreciation. However, several emerging markets, particularly those of India and China, managed to spur further improvements, as demand continues to increase in these regions.

Compaq revamps network
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp., makers of personal computers, hired the services of Philip Yu, former chairman and CEO of Nortel Ltd., to head the company's operations in China. The move came in the light of a report that the company was losing market share to IBM and Legend Holdings. Mr Yu's stint as president of AT&T China and Hewlett-Packard China made him the most qualified candidate for the position because he understands the Chinese economy.
