WORLD: THE TOP 40 RETAILERS
Article Abstract:
The world's food retailing landscape changed noticeably in 1999 with the mergers and acquisitions carried out by the American company Wal-Mart and the French company Carrefour. By merging with Promodes, Carrefour aims to counteract Wal-Mart, which intends to become the leader in Europe through its external growth operations. Wal-Mart is by far number one of the world's Top 40 retailers, with a net turnover of US$ 151.2bn in 1999, followed by the Carrefour-Promodes group with an estimated US$ 53bn in 1999, Metro AG with US$ 50.7bn, and the American companies Albersons with US$ 35.9bn, and Kroger with US$ 33.7bn. Of the world's Top 20 retail companies, 13 are European (including four French and four German), four are American, and three are Japanese.

Since 20 August 1997, the law has hindered the development of large retailers. The Portuguese government's moratorium has now come to an end. BRAZIL: THE SCOPE OF LARGE RETAILERS
Article Abstract:
Brazilian consumers are increasingly attracted by specialised large retailers' stores, particularly for DIY, books, educational and luxury products, and by shopping centres (506 units) visited by 62mn people per month. In the food retailing sector, Carrefour, the French retail group which has 70 hypermarkets, 120 supermarkets, and which makes a turnover of US$ 4.2bn, competes with Pao de Acucar, which has 378 units for a turnover of US$ 3.9bn. Despite Carrefour's leadership, French food products are present but little in Brazil, representing only 2% of Carrefour's selection. Other French retail chains - Leroy Merlin, Castorama, and FNAC, are also present in Brazil.
