PPL EMERGES STRONG PLAYER

Paper Products Limited (PPL), a laminated and coated paper manufacturer, has shown good performance in the flexible packaging segment. During the first half year ended September 1998, the company posted turnover of Rs95 crore and profit of Rs4 crore (Rs167 crore turnover and Rs6 crore profit for 1997- 98). The gross and net profit levels increased to 18 percent (16 percent) and 5.3 percent (3.7 percent) respectively. The company's facilities are situated at Kalyani, Nagpur, Thane and Silvassa. PPL has acquired APR packaging unit in Hyderabad from Thapars. PPL supplies packaging material to MNCs like Nestle, Hindustan Lever, Cadburys, Procter and Gamble and Britannia. PPL has accomplished modernisation of its units. It has obtained technology from Avery Dennison of US for label printing on containers. (um)(psr)

Balrampur Chini Mills (BCM) has posted a 32.4 percent growth in sales and 84 percent rise in net profit to Rs44.51 crore for 1997- 98. Its sugar production increased by 20 percent to 252,000 tonnes in 1997-98. Its unit sales realisation was better than 1996-97 and its recovery rate in Bhabnan Sugar and Balrampur Chini increased. BCM has increased its output and brought 75 percent of its output outside the levy purview. It plans to use the brand name for its packed sugar products and has economies of scale as its facilities have 15,500 tonnes per day crushing capacity. The stock trades at Rs100 now. (rk)
