New PM Edouard Balladur has public support for his budget, which reduces spending by $12.8 billion a year. The French economy is dependent on a swift end to the European recession, although Balladur's policies on lowering interest rates and reducing unemployment should help.

Edouard Balladur, France's new prime minister, has proposed stringent controls to improve the French economy and balance the budget. Income taxes will be increased and government salaries will be frozen. Some government money will be spent on incentives to boost the economy.

France is putting its economy in order in time to qualify for the European Monetary Union and common currency in Jan 1999. It will reach the criteria of a budget deficit of no more than 3% of GDP by 1998, thanks mostly to stronger economic growth.
