Prince Sihanouk has taken to his sick bed since his son Prince Ranariddh, an opposition party leader, refuses to join in a coalition government. Although Sihanouk lost UN-sponsored elections, many feel he has the support of most parties, even the Khmer Rouge, if he is willing to compromise.

The Khmer Rouge is staging military attacks to disrupt the upcoming national elections, fearing a loss of their international clout. The Phnom Penh government may have staged some attacks, because of their opposition to followers of Pol Pot.
