The key points of Approved Document Part L (ADL) make air-pressure testing mandatory including just one calculation method for dwellings and non-domestic buildings, set maximum carbon dioxide emissions for whole buildings, and insist that government-funded residential buildings need to comply with more stringent codes. Other documents include ADF: Means of Ventilation, and Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, which sets an energy rating for all buildings placed in a visible location.

The Standard Assessment Procedure for Energy Rating of Dwellings is hidden on the Building Regulation's (BRE's) website and those expecting the ODPM, the arbiter of the Building Regulations, to notify them of its release should be aware that it has been taken as a publication for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The Approved Document Part L is a revised second-tier upgrade that will be updated automatically in case of advance in one area of energy efficiency.

The ways in building innovative housing and ensuring that there is confidence in the long-term durability of the product are described.
