Passive solar offices: integrated design
Article Abstract:
Hypothetical office designs to a realistic brief are being used by the Energy Technology Support Unit of the UK Department of Energy to promote the use of passive solar energy. Passive solar design makes use of daylight and natural ventilation to remove the need for air-conditioning. The opening-up of walls and roofs to achieve this can make the internal design more interesting. However, there is inadequate research on whether occupants can control ventilation and heating effectively. It is important that clients can see the actual savings made by using passive solar design.

Building offices over the dock
Article Abstract:
PSA architects have designed offices for HM Customs and Excise at Queens Graving Dock, Liverpool, England. The building comprises two five storey blocks on each side of the dock and linked by two four storey bridging blocks. The bridging blocks were built in two parts with a piled platform in the centre of the dock. Their weight was reduced as much as possible. The dockside blocks were designed for speed of construction using steel frame structure.

Two become one
Article Abstract:
The budget conversion of two adjoining warehouses from the 1990s and 1980s into one building of speculative offices was a challenge for Wells Mackereth Architects. The 1990's warehouse was a two-storey one, while that of 1980's was a single-storey one.
