Courting disaster: Britain and China agree on Court of Not-Quite-Final Appeal
Article Abstract:
The Sino-British agreement regarding the Court of Final Appeal posits more questions rather than providing the desired answers and is making observers still more nervous about China's ultimate intentions. That uncertainty is itself causing problems and drawing businesses out of the area. Beijing continues to mount every possible objection to anything it dislikes, rather than cooperating as it promised. Possible Chinese re-definition of the phrase 'acts of state' is the latest issue threatening Hong Kong's legal system.

Thorn in the side: Democratic Party continues to fight China
Article Abstract:
The Democratic Party of Hong Kong is the colony's most popular political party despite its hostility toward Beijing and the latter's refusal to recognize its legitimacy. In 1991 the Democratic Party, then known as United Democrats of Hong Kong, won 12 of 18 Legco seats, and hopes to replicate the feat this Sept. China has founded and aggressively backs the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong in opposition. Many in Hong Kong consider the Democratic Party a tax-and-spend group with a socialist agenda.
