Article Abstract:
The beautiful Lijiang area in the Chinese province of Yunnan is attracting increasing numbers of Southeast Asian tourists. The forecast for tourist numbers in 1997 is 60,000, compared to just a few in 1992. The area needs the finance which tourism brings, but it also needs to balance tourist development with preservation of the countryside and the local minority culture. Developers and tourist officials have succeeded in building tourist facilities and infrastructure in some areas. The proposed development of a 30,000-square-kilometer national park is one idea from the conservation lobby.

Paradise preserved: a former diplomat safeguards his islands' natural and cultural treasures
Article Abstract:
Businessman and restoration buff Des Alwi controls much of the tourist infrastructure of Bandanaira, capital of the Bandas Islands in Indonesia. He uses the profits from his two hotels and his monopoly on diving equipment to finance the Banda Naira Cultural and Heritage Foundation, which he founded in 1990. It has thus far restored 18 of the islands' 25 historic structures, and Des hopes the Bandas will be named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Nes is also a filmmaker, construction company president, author, and avid diver.

Counting blessings
Article Abstract:
The Philippine tourism industry is probably in the midst of a banner year for several reasons, but longer-term problems will require extensive investment. The Pope's visit in Jan, the Miss Universe Pageant, and the 50th anniversary of the US military landing at Leyte all brought extensive publicity, but the country still lags in tourists behind Malaysia, itself the 10th-most popular destination in the region. More and better air links and tourist facilities will help.
