Fear on the open road
Article Abstract:
Europe's trucking industry is expected to undergo a fundamental shake-up as protectionist barriers are removed in preparation for an open road system under the planned single European market. Increased competition and higher cross-border freightage traffic are expected to trigger a radical industry restructuring that will be characterized by a wave of acquisitions and mergers. The deregulation process has already started with the introduction of a limited cabotage rights system by the European Commission. Unrestricted cabotage is expected to be enforced after Jan 1, 1993. The consolidation may well extend to the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries and eastern Europe as a pan-European road haulage market evolves by the year 2000.

Freedom to mix and match
Article Abstract:
Open systems software can provide large companies the ability to build computer networks using different makes of machines. Open systems consist of intermediate software that enable proprietary computer programs to behave identically. They allow companies the advantages of newer technology by enabling the link-up of up-to-date personal computers (PCs) within an existing network. The European market for open systems reached $30.5 billion in 1990 and is expanding at 12% a year. Concerns over international standards and uncertainty over the costs of converting to open systems networks are, however, cooling market demand.
