Pocket power
Article Abstract:
Palmtop personal computers are a viable product. The small size of the keyboard would not encourage a large amount of typing, and Internet users would probably prefer a larger screen. However, they have standard software packages, and their uses could include e-mail access and presentations. Most palmtops use the Microsoft Windows CE operating system and, for their weight and their cost, they have some powerful functions. Palmtops cost $400-1,000 compared to $1,500 for the cheapest notebook computer, and the packages come complete with all the necessary hardware and software.

Get physical
Article Abstract:
Notebook computers all have certain features, including a fast processor and a spacious memory, in common. However, different models have different additional features and physical characteristics. A prospective purchaser should consider these carefully, and handle the models to ensure they meet their individual requirements. Users for whom weight is an important factor should consider whether or not they need a CD-ROM drive, and they should check the weight of the power unit. Other important features for a purchaser may include battery life and screen quality.

What's in store
Article Abstract:
There will continue to be significant developments in information technology in 1998. Processors that can run at 450 MHz will probably be available by the end of 1998, and notebook computers will increasingly take on the features of the desktop computer. Notebook screens will continue to become less expensive, and there will be developments in dual-scan screen technology, possibly rendering costly active-screen technology unnecessary. A particularly important development will be the launch by Microsoft of Windows 98.
