Strep in children should be taken seriously, with the bacterium Streptococcus known to produce toxins that can lead to rheumatic fever and scarlet fever. Symptoms of strep include white crud on the back of the throat, enlarged lymph nodes on the neck, pain when swallowing, an accompanying fever and associated headache or stomachache. Prevention techniques include consumption of lemon balm and Oregon graperoot.
