Prince of patronage: shares row spotlights controversial Indian leader
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) Pres Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu's political survival depends on his being cleared of charges relating to misappropriation of shares. Samy Vellu has been accused of misappropriating 9 million Telecom Malaysia shares meant for the Indian community in Malaysia. He has also faced a lot of criticism due to his style of politics. Critics argue that the thrust behind the MIC's economic, social and political policies is the maintenance of support for its leadership. Samy Vellu, however, feels that he has helped improve the lot of the Indian community, especially at the grassroots level.

A Malaysian who dared sue a king
Article Abstract:
Malaysian lawyer Karpal Singh has achieved a reputation for accepting difficult cases that involve the constitutional liberties of ordinary citizens. A native of Penang, the 53-year-old Karpal also sits in Parliament as a member for the opposition Democratic Action Party. He has often resisted the government's heavy-handed enforcement of the Internal Security Act (ISA), in one case preventing the hanging of a 14-year-old boy. Karpal himself was imprisoned under the ISA in 1987 and 1989 due to his opposition to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad.

Man on the spot; the shadow of patronage falls on Thaksin too
Article Abstract:
Concerns about Deputy Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's wealth continue to plague both him and Palang Dharma, the party he leads as a minority member of Thailand's coalition govt. He has some 60 billion baht in assets, spread across many sectors where success requires govt contracts or approval. His approval within his own party, and among the general public, remains high despite accusations that he uses his money to boost his political position, and vice versa. He is under some pressure to leave an unpopular govt.
