Article Abstract:
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 call on employers to provide minimum standards of lighting quality for all visual display screen users. Guidance can be found in the CIBSE's Lighting Guid LG3:1996 and the Lighting Industry Federation has established the LIF-VDT Luminaire Registration Scheme to help designers compare the various luminaires. Emergency lighting products should be ICEL approved to comply with best practice, and recent developments have banned the use of acrylic diffusers in defined escape routes. New lighting and cable products are listed.

Article Abstract:
The UK Dept of the Environment's (DoE) forthcoming consultation paper on fire safety is expected to have great implications for building design and the UK fire protection and security products sector. The paper is expected to restrict, but not prohibit, the use of insulated sandwich panels which are have a combustible foamed plastic insulation core contained within steel panels. It is also expected that the paper will recommend that sprinkler systems should be compulsory for all uncompartmented single-story spaces over 4,000 sq mt, for example superstores and DIY stores.
