Progress in fight for sustainable fishing

At various meetings which took place in the year 2005, Canada played a key role in addressing global issues with respect to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, to improve fisheries and oceans governance. This has led to the issuance of the Rome Declaration against the IUU fishing, with19 countries providing their confirmation.

Years of complaints by the groundfish fishermen have been answered by the European Union (EU), which is stepping in to regulate the big-catching industrial fisheries. Organizations like the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds are pressurizing the EU, alleging that the industrial catchers are taking away species on which seabirds feed.

Europe turning to sustainable supplies

Conservation group, the Marine Stewardship Council, which has 1 50 products, will be exhibiting at the European Seafood Exposition with the MSC logo. The MSC is working for encouraging responsible fisheries, which will be increasingly accepted by the industry for being conservationists, which benefits both retailers and consumers equally.
