RBS announces share buyback, posts profit rise

A share buyback of up to 1 billion Pounds ($1.74 billion) is being planned by the Royal Bank of Scotland PLC of the United Kingdom. The banking giant posted a net income increase of 17 percent to 5.39 billion Pounds in 2005, up from 4.62 billion Pounds in 2004. Also, the Royal Bank of Scotland PLC is currently promising no further acquisitions.

UK banks are tightening restrictions on consumer credit and increasing collection efforts in an effort to curb bad debt levels. The Bank of England upped its official rate from 5.5% to 5.75%, which could make it more difficult for consumers to borrow.
