RIBA 'should give accreditation to conservation architects.'
Article Abstract:
Conservation architects would like the RIBA to launch an accreditation system, particularly with regard to work on listed buildings, although the RIBA Council recently turned down such a proposal. Head of architectural conservation at English Heritage, John Fidler, believes that such a system is important as there is a general loss of skills and a need for specialist practitioners. Some believe many recent conservation techniques have led to irreversible problems and that repairs to old buildings need not necessarily be undertaken using original materials, but should be undertaken using the best materials of the time.

Learning from history: when restoring old buildings, it is imperative to think like the original architects, including their use of sacrificial materials
Article Abstract:
Knowing how the original architects of a building thought is an important part of practising conservation, according to John Hurd, speaking at the RIBA conservation conference held in Bath. He believes there is a general level of ignorance of the way that buildings work and it is important think locally when practising conservation. He also does not believe that the most obvious solution is the best and that some conservation projects ignore major changes that have taken place.
