Article Abstract:
Iranian President Muhammad Khatami has called for wide-reaching economic reforms. This stance has attracted support from his political opponents. However, it will inevitably prove very difficult to implement a radical reform programme. The main problem will be overcoming the rapid rise in unemployment among young people. Khatami's ability to implement economic reform may be determined by his ability to carry out political reform.
