Readjusting the lens
Article Abstract:
US productivity growth dropped to 1% annually in the 1970s, from almost 3% during the 1950s and 1960s, and then rose again during the 1990s. Revised data show a rise from the 1980s, with a sharper rise from 1995. There is a debate on whether information technology is boosting US productivity, and the extent to which any rise may be long term or simply cyclical. Revisions include classification of computer software as an investment rather than as a business expense. There is also a debate as to whether the rise in productivity is restricted to only a few sectors.
