Real democracy, Chinese-style
Article Abstract:
Elections in Taiwan have resulted in a victory for the Kuomintang (KMT), the ruling party, though the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had performed well in the polls. China prefers the KMT to the DPP, though relations have not always been cordial with the KMT. The KMT sought to set aside ethnic divisions in its election campaign, and intermarriage has tended to blur such divisions. Taiwanese president, Lee Teng-hui, argues that China should become democratic before unification between Taiwan and China.
