Article Abstract:
The Russian money-laundering scandal has led to concern among western banks, which are examining their transactions with Russia. Money-laundering involves making money respectable when it has come from criminal activities, but there is also a problem of capital flight whereby savings are exported abroad, where they are deemed safer. Criminal gangs may offer capital flight as a service, while many dubious activities can be performed legally if a fee is paid. Western approaches to money-laundering may not be effective when tackling the Russian problem.
