Reducing depot-related costs of large bus operators: a case study in Bangkok
Article Abstract:
A hierarchical modelling approach for reducing operating cost is shown to result in substantial cost savings for bus operators. Of specific concern is the unproductive cost resulting from the idle running of buses between depots and routes. Using 1992 data for the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority in Thailand, it was found that the level of idle running can be reduced by 42%, or 10,431,000 kms. annually. Simple heuristics enabled the distribution of more than 90% of the buses to the correct type.
