Article Abstract:

Bolton Wanderers Football Club, England, used a design and build approach for the development of its new stadium. The architect, LOBB Sports Architecture, was novated to the main contractor Birse Construction. The design of the stadium incorporates the possibility for future expansion in seating and hospitality areas. The stadium has four large curving roofs which are hung from a truss. The roof subcontract went to Hathaway, which chose Plannja for the roof system, whilst the curtain walling subcontract went to Norking Aluminium.

Specifiers choice: learning resource centre, Thames Valley University

Article Abstract:

The new learning resource centre at Thames Valley University was designed by Richard Rogers Partnership and features a solid three storey linear concrete frame, with a shorter metal barrel vault running parallel. Each of the arched beams had to be site welded as they were tool large to be transported by road. Glass was used for the stair treads and the first floor level bridge. Raised flooring was used throughout, due to the need for large amounts of cabling.

The bold design of the West Ham Underground Station, London, is discussed. Designed by van Heyningen and Haward Architects, it features extensive brick cladding over a concrete frame, brick columns and a colonnaded ticket hall.
