Manet is usually known as a painter of portraits and flowers. But in Napoleonic France, he was considered a radical. His 3 painting depicting the execution of Maximilian, the governor of Mexico betrayed by Napoleon shows his political side. The paintings were never shown in France during Manet's lifetime.

A gunpoint constitution: Myanmar

The 1993 constitutional convention in Myanmar has again been suspended, because the military's hand-picked delegates object to the broad powers that the ruling generals would receive if the proposed constitution were adopted. The 1994 election may be stalled as a result.
