Renault proposes to acquire 35% stake in Nissan as part of strategic alliance

Renault SA has made a formal proposal to acquire a share in Nissan Motor Co. Renault is proposing to buy approximately 35% of Nissan in a deal estimated to be worth $5 billion. The board of directors of Renault made the formal offer to Nissan as they requested exclusive negotiations. Nissan is the second-ranked auto maker in Japan. Nissan said it would try to establish the conditions for an alliance by the end of March 1999.
