Reputational spillovers, innovation, licensing, and entry
Article Abstract:
The effects of reputational spillovers on inventor decision making are analyzed. Choices on how many licenses to sell and the method of sale are shown to be dependent on either the 'halo effect' or 'black eye effect' an invention can give to the reputation of the adopting firm. A 'halo effect' enhances the adopter's reputation while the 'black eye effect' does the opposite. Reputational spillover effects can also affect an inventor's choice between entry and licensing.
