Rice chides Putin on democratic, economic policies

United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is on a diplomatic mission to President Vladimir Putin of Russia, Ms. Rice is critical of Mr. Putin's uncertain commitment to free-market economies and democracy but also recognizes that Russia " . . . is not the Soviet Union". The United States seeks Russian support for the War on Terrorism, the Holy Grail of Israeli-Palestinian peace and continuing frustration with North Korea and Iran. Russia seeks American support for membership in the World Trade Organization.

Bush, Putin take cooperative tack as WTO beckons
Article Abstract:
President George W. Bush of United States and President Vladimir Putin of Russia met in Slovakia in international negotiation. Mr. Bush agreed to back Russia's bid to become a member of the World Trade Organization and Mr. Putin in turn agreed to a cooperative nuclear armaments program and improve transparency in the investment and business community. Mr. Putin also promised to continue with the democratization of Russia.
