Illegal overseas workers flock to Japan for good pay and expect social hardships but often find the latter are worse than anticipated. Nonetheless, the chance to save up to $1,500 a month is a powerful draw, and 280,000 workers have now overstayed their visas, compared to 106,000 in 1990. The yen's relative strength rather than a healthy economy seems to be the main influence. They often do work Japanese shun, or that the aging population opens up. However, they are vulnerable to exploitative employers and abuses of the legal system.
