Road less travelled: economic, political fallout likely from expressway feud
Article Abstract:
Thailand's government, as ordered by Interior Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyut, on Aug 31, 1993 won a court order that directed Bangkok Expressway Co Ltd (BECL) to open an expressway that it had built and for which it held a 30-year concession. Foreign investors contributed much of BECL's funding. Chavalit, by failing to consult with the rest of the Thai cabinet, reinforced Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's reputation for poor leadership. Moreover, by violating BECL's contract, Chavalit threatened to deter the additional foreign investment that is vital to Thailand's economy.

Mexican stand-off: Thai stockmarket rules confuse foreign investors
Article Abstract:
Regulatory initiatives for the Thai Stock Exchange may pose problems for foreign investors. A proposal to remove restrictions on foreign ownership of Thai stocks will lead to high paper losses, while the opening of the Stock Exchange's Securities Deposit Centre, with its computerized account balancing, will reduce dividends for foreign investors. In addition, the Thai SEC may set up a so-called Mexican Trust to take care of foreign-owned shares, a proposal that some foreigners fear will reduce their investment opportunities in Thailand.

A nap after gorging
Article Abstract:
Thailand has received a sizeable investment inflow between 1987 and 1991. In 1992, there has been an observable standstill in investment activity which has alarmed casual observers. This slowdown, however, is considered by more knowledgeable quarters as a normal and will not in any way detract from the tremendous growth in manufacturing and export that the country has been experiencing. The country, nevertheless, faces some competition from its Southeast Asian neighbors in attracting foreign investment in the future.
